The seismic performance of timber‐framed structures filled with stones and earth mortar has been analyzed by introducing the structural subscales (cell, wall, house) at which monotonic and cyclic loadings were considered. This article aims to present the dynamic behavior of a house as determined through shaking table tests. Based on this experimental multiscale analysis, this paper confirms that timbered masonry structures offer effective seismic resistance; moreover, such a comprehensive analysis helps enhance understanding of the seismic‐resistant behavior of timber‐framed structures with infill. This paper also aids ongoing development of a numerical tool intended to predict the seismic‐resistant behavior of this type of structure.
Although earth has been used for construction for millennia and is still one of the most widely used building materials in the world, it is still difficult to find reliable values for the hygro-thermal and mechanical properties of earthen materials. Only little scientific research has been conducted on this material compared to the huge literature available concerning cementitious materials. Considering the literature available on earthen materials, a majority of studies deal with cement or lime stabilized earth for compressed earth blocks or rammed earth, and less has been done about natural unstabilized earth. The only existing comprehensive overview on the hydro-thermal and mechanical properties of earthen materials was authored by CRAterre-ENSAG and published 25 years ago. Now, for the second time in its thirty years of existence, CRAterre-ENSAG has undertaken the task of re-actualizing this synthetic knowledge by writing a comprehensive review of the existing literature on the subject, thanks to the CRAterre laboratory documentation centre, which is the most complete source of information on earthen construction and architecture in the world (more than 20.000 references). In the present work, we intend to compile the most reliable experimental data on the hygro-thermal and mechanical properties of natural earth. We will inventory the performances determined by several research teams for rammed earth, compressed earth blocks, adobe, cob and mortar. We will discuss the reliability of the experimental techniques used. We will provide an overview on the state of knowledge concerning the different properties as well as on the lacking data. Finally, this literature review will also give some orientations for further scientific research. 1

This paper investigates the persistence of earthen construction techniques in Central Asia from ancient to modern times with a pertinent case study from Tajikistan. The article describes modalities of skill transfer in relation to earthen architecture and tests a new multidisciplinary approach to investigate the persistence of building practices.Architecture, especially earthen architecture, is one category of material culture that has been relatively little explored from this perspective.Particularly relevant for this case study is the combination of ethnoarchaeology and architectural analysis used to examine skill transfer and relationships between social identities and architecture. On the basis of the comparison between archaeological and ethnographic data, it is possible to determine the process behind skill transfer, its connection to society and the complex relationship between the natural and built environment.

This paper assesses the significance of the Tour Perret, which was built for the 1925 international exhibition on ‘houille blanche’ (‘white coal’ or hydroelectric power) and tourism held in Grenoble. This tower could also have been the symbol of Grenoble's know-how in reinforced concrete. In spite of the region's long history in the cement industry, particularly since Vicat was set up, it was a Paris-based company that won the bid in 1924. The firm was run by the Perret brothers, two pioneers in this field, who were commissioned to design the tower in a few weeks and to build it in 7 months. This project was quite a challenge from the construction point of view and it is often compared with the Eiffel Tower built in 1889 for the centenary of the French Revolution. Tour Perret was built to demonstrate the extraordinary possibilities of reinforced concrete, just as the Eiffel Tower had done for iron in its day.
