OBJECTIVE: The TAS 20 has demonstrated strong psychometric properties in a broad variety of studies in healthy populations. Much less work has been done in clinical contexts exploring the validity of the TAS 20 as a measure of the cognitive processing of emotions. The TAS 20, a self-report scale, tends to correlate with self-reported negative affect, but in a clinical context it is important to be able to differentiate between negative affect and the cognitive processing of emotion. We therefore used the TAS 20 and a performance measure, the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale (LEAS), which in previous studies demonstrated no overlap with measures of negative affect, to explore the ability of the two measures to detect deficits in emotional awareness in a clinical sample. METHODS: Data from inpatients of a psychosomatic ward were collected at onset (N = 394) and at the end of multimodal psychodynamic treatment (N = 249). The sample consisted of six diagnostic groups (depression; anxiety and compulsive-obsessive disorders, adjustment disorders, somatoform disorders, psychological factors related to somatic disorders, eating disorders). Changes in the TAS 20 and LEAS were compared at the two time points controlling for the effects of gender, age, educational level, and associations with self-reported negative affect. RESULTS: In contrast to the LEAS, the TAS 20 correlated with negative affect at the onset and the end of treatment. The scores of the TAS 20 decreased with treatment in all diagnostic groups but the change in the TAS 20 was not statistically significant when negative affect was controlled. In contrast, LEAS scores increased with treatment in the groups with somatoform disorders and psychological factors related to somatic disorders, and this change was independent of negative affect. CONCLUSION: The LEAS captured a change in emotional awareness due to treatment, whereas the TAS 20 captured a change in negative affect. The LEAS appears to be a more specific measure of change in emotional awareness in clinical contexts than the TAS 20.
We propose a neural network architecture that emulates the behavior of a physics solver that solves electricity differential equations to compute electricity flow in power grids (so-called "load flow"). Load flow computation is a well studied and understood problem, but current methods (based on Newton-Raphson) are slow. With increasing usage expectations of the current infrastructure, it is important to find methods to accelerate computations. One avenue we are pursuing in this paper is to use proxies based on "graph neural networks". In contrast with previous neural network approaches, which could only handle fixed grid topologies, our novel graph-based method, trained on data from power grids of a given size, generalizes to larger or smaller ones. We experimentally demonstrate viability of the method on randomly connected artificial grids of size 30 nodes. We achieve better accuracy than the DC-approximation (a standard benchmark linearizing physical equations) on random power grids whose size range from 10 nodes to 110 nodes. Our neural network learns to solve the load flow problem without overfitting to a specific instance of the problem.

The present paper has two intimately connected goals; It aims at contributing to Chomsky's "Government Binding Theory" and also at providing a fairly detailed comparative analysis of French and English impersonal constructions. Its contribution comes under the guise of (a) an Agreement Theory (see section 2), (b) a general constraint on impersonal chains (see (72)) and (c) a new nominative Case assignment rule: it is suggested that in French and Italian (but not in English) "ergative verbs" (in Burzio (1981) 'sense) can assign nominative Case to their "object". Furthermore, as has become standard in recent comparative work in the GB framework, the paper attempts to isolate the parameters that are responsible for the minimally distinct properties of the constructions under investigation. It is shown here that they can be traced back to the interplay of a Case parameter, the morphological properties of expletive elements (il vs there) and the properties of Universal Grammar.
To examine the relationship of chromosome 1 copy number to melanocytic tumorigenesis, interphase cytogenetic analysis of 1q12 satellite III DNA was performed on the spectrum of melanocytic lesions comprising Clark's tumor progression model. Results showed increased copy number in a "step off" pattern between melanoma in-situ and the intraepidermal component of invasive melanoma rather than a progression between each lesional group. These findings support Clark's concept of independent clonal expansion of a cell population giving rise to the vertical growth phase and further demonstrates increased chromosome 1 copy number as a late event in melanoma tumor progression.
DC MicroGrids with the integration of renewable energy sources (renewables) and energy storage systems can improve the performance of power systems, ensuring safe operation of a local network, where the MicroGrid control is responsible to assure stability and power quality of the system. This paper proposes a distributed nonlinear control strategy for a DC MicroGrid composed of a PV, a battery storage and a supercapacitor to properly supply a local AC load, where a complete stability analysis in conducted using Lyapunov techniques. The MicroGrid is connected to an AC grid by a VSC converter, which injects the right amount of active and reactive power according to the AC load demand. The supercapacitor's duty is to control DC bus voltage dealing with transient stability while the battery fulfills long term power flow, where the energy is controlled to assure power flow balance, ensuring proper operation for the MicroGrid. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed control and the system's operation.
One of the industries that uses large amounts of water is the food industry. Industrial, domestic managers of the production process stand out with it and enter the environment surrounded by contaminated effluents. Their main feature is the high content of dissolved organic matter and nitrogen. You can also create wall water to create aggregate-resistant colloids, which include animal and vegetable fats, proteins, starch, sugar, as well as salts, carbohydrates, dyes, thickeners, preservatives. As a result of the technology of treatment of such industrial effluents, is a combination of different technologies and methods of treatment and the creation of several units depending on the parameters of wastewater. The purpose of our work is: 1) Analysis of physical and chemical indicators of industrial waters of food industry enterprises, monitoring of their impact on the environment; 2) to outline perspective directions of technologies of industrial water purification and creation of closed water circulation systems.
This paper is yet another contribution to a debate where many people contributed recently [Delft 89, Meek 90, Sakkinen 91, and others...], the ones pleading for considering enumerated types as harmful, and the others as important. But the debate will probably be more useful if levels --- layers --- of programming are taken into account. The good answer has no reason to be the same in real life and at machine level. From my point of view, programming includes an untyping process from the former to the latter. I claim here that enumerated types do give right answers to very real questions in programming, but that they would be yet more useful if they were restricted enough to become closer to real life, as it can be done with Ada private types.
When a hypersonic vehicle travels through a planetary atmosphere, it can face a severe degradation of its wireless communication systems due to the creation of a plasma around it, a problem commonly known as the “communication blackout.” One solution proposed in the literature is to apply an external static magnetic field within the reentry plasma layer to create a “magnetic window” that allows the propagation of electromagnetic waves. However, this static magnetic field leads to complex phenomena within the plasma, such as nonpurely transverse waves, mode conversions, and resonances. In order to better understand the physics involved, we propose an analytical model that takes into account the inhomogeneity of the electron density and collision frequency in the plasma layer, the nonuniform static magnetic field produced by permanent magnets, and the oblique incidence of the electromagnetic waves. This model demonstrates a transmission enhancement of 85 dB at an altitude of 50 km for the Radio Attenuation Measurement C vehicle, considering a right-hand circular polarized electromagnetic wave at 1575.42 MHz, while more than half of the incident power is transmitted through the plasma slab over a field of view of 74°, still preserving the polarization purity of the incident EM wave.
With the potential to find global solutions, significant research interest\nhas focused on convex relaxations of the non-convex OPF problem. Recently,\n"moment-based" relaxations from the Lasserre hierarchy for polynomial\noptimization have been shown capable of globally solving a broad class of OPF\nproblems. Global solution of many large-scale test cases is accomplished by\nexploiting sparsity and selectively applying the computationally intensive\nhigher-order relaxation constraints. Previous work describes an iterative\nalgorithm that indicates the buses for which the higher-order constraints\nshould be enforced. In order to speed computation of the moment relaxations,\nthis paper provides a study of the key parameter in this algorithm as applied\nto relaxations from both the original Lasserre hierarchy and a recent complex\nextension of the Lasserre hierarchy.\n
Abstract Study question Can a newly developed 3D label-free optical imaging system be applied to visualize key preimplantation events with potential utility for embryo screening applications? Summary answer The OWLO scope, a real-time non-invasive microscope captured subcellular structures deep in the embryo and key cellular events, unattainable with current light microscopes. What is known already IVF embryos are routinely cultured and assessed by phase-contrast microscopy to evaluate their developmental potential and predict their viability post-implantation). Current screening approaches rely on morphological evaluation at blastocyst stage, just prior to transfer (Gardner et al., 2016), or on continuous time-lapse monitoring throughout development using light microscopy. However, these methods are restricted to 2D imaging and offer limited cellular resolution. Consequently, the development of label-free technologies enabling high-resolution three-dimensional visualization has the potential to fundamentally advance embryo screening. Study design, size, duration We tested our OWLO microscope on preimplantation mouse embryos (n = 25). Two-cell embryos were monitored for four days with images acquired every 12h. The results were compared to classic DIC and confocal microscopy using fluorescent dyes (Domingo-Muelas et al, Cell, 2024). Embryos were imaged to track continuous cellular events like cell division. We also tested this new microscope to perform detailed analyses of blastocysts, distinguishing between major structures as well as static and active structures. Participants/materials, setting, methods We used thawed, 2-cell stage mouse embryos under standard culture conditions. Embryos were imaged throughout development until blastocyst stage using the OWLO scope prototype (270 nm lateral and 1.75 µm axial resolution; near-infrared swept-source laser, 800–875 nm; rapid volumetric acquisition (Balondrade et al, Nature Photonics, 2024). In parallel, embryos were imaged with standard DIC and confocal imaging with fluorescent dyes (Leica Stellaris 5. For rigor, embryos were assessed for phototoxicity and development to blastocyst stage. Main results and the role of chance The new label-free 3D optic system revealed key events such as cell divisions occurring deep within the embryo, currently unattainable with standard 2D imaging microscope systems (DIC) and validated via confocal imaging. Similarly, we obtained detailed morphological analysis of the ICM, which could be computationally segmented in its entirety for further quantitative analyses. Further, quantitative 3D segmentation analyses provided detailed morphological metrics such as cell volume and embryo sphericity, which were comparable to data found with conventional confocal imaging (p > 0.05). Finally, discriminating static from active structures provided a new approach to assess cell viability in the intact-developing embryo. Limitations, reasons for caution This proof-of-concept study demonstrates the feasibility of quantitative 3D label-free embryo imaging in mouse embryo preimplantation development although the cohort is small. Continued improvements in spatial resolution using larger datasets and human embryos will enhance characterization of fine biological features. Wider implications of the findings The combination of label-free 3D imaging with automated analyses markedly exceeds the resolution of current 2D systems. This may substantially extend the range of cellular parameters predicting embryo viability. Beyond reproductive applications, OWLO’s technology is also being explored for organoids and in vivo medical imaging of tissues such as retina. Trial registration number No
