The CMS experiment at the CERN LHC

The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector is described. The detector operates at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. It was conceived to study proton-proton (and lead-lead) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV (5.5 TeV nucleon-nucleon) and at luminosities up to 1034 cm−2 s−1 (1027 cm−2 s−1). At the core of the CMS detector sits a high-magnetic-field and large-bore superconducting solenoid surrounding an all-silicon pixel and strip tracker, a lead-tungstate scintillating-crystals electromagnetic calorimeter, and a brass-scintillator sampling hadron calorimeter. The iron yoke of the flux-return is instrumented with four stations of muon detectors covering most of the 4π solid angle. Forward sampling calorimeters extend the pseudorapidity coverage to high values (|η| ≤ 5) assuring very good hermeticity. The overall dimensions of the CMS detector are a length of 21.6 m, a diameter of 14.6 m and a total weight of 12500 t.

WinXAS: a Program for X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Data Analysis under MS-Windows

WinXAS is a new X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data-analysis program. It runs under the operating system MS-Windows 95/NT and offers several unique features. It has a user-friendly graphical environment and is capable of reading a variety of data formats. It contains a number of useful numerical algorithms beyond those used in conventional XAS analysis and offers a simple interface to the ab-initio theoretical code FEFF. The availability of fast macros in WinXAS makes it particularly useful for on-line data examination at synchrotron radiation facilities during XAS experiments as well as for the analysis of multiple-scan data such as those from time-resolved experiments.

Emissions of primary aerosol and precursor gases in the years 2000 and 1750 prescribed data-sets for AeroCom

Abstract. Inventories for global aerosol and aerosol precursor emissions have been collected (based on published inventories and published simulations), assessed and prepared for the year 2000 (present-day conditions) and for the year 1750 (pre-industrial conditions). These global datasets establish a comprehensive source for emission input to global modeling, when simulating the aerosol impact on climate with state-of-the-art aerosol component modules. As these modules stratify aerosol into dust, sea-salt, sulfate, organic matter and soot, for all these aerosol types global fields on emission strength and recommendations for injection altitude and particulate size are provided. Temporal resolution varies between daily (dust and sea-salt), monthly (wild-land fires) and annual (all other emissions). These datasets benchmark aerosol emissions according to the knowledge in the year 2004. They are intended to serve as systematic constraints in sensitivity studies of the AeroCom initiative, which seeks to quantify (actual) uncertainties in aerosol global modeling.

NMR Spectroscopy Techniques for Screening and Identifying Ligand Binding to Protein Receptors

Binding events of ligands to receptors are the key for an understanding of biological processes. Gaining insight into protein-protein and protein-ligand interactions in solution has recently become possible on an atomic level by new NMR spectroscopic techniques. These experiments identify binding events either by looking at the resonance signals of the ligand or the protein. Ideally, both techniques together deliver a complete picture of ligand binding to a receptor. The approaches discussed in this review allow screening of compound libraries as well as a detailed identification of the groups involved in the binding events. Also, characterization of the binding strength and kinetics is possible, competitive binding as well as allosteric effects can be identified, and it has even been possible to identify ligand binding to intact viruses and membrane-bound proteins.

Evolutionary models for cool brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. The case of HD 209458

We present evolutionary models for cool brown dwarfs and extra-solar giant planets. The models reproduce the main trends of observed methane dwarfs in near-IR color-magnitude diagrams. We also present evolutionary models for irradiated planets, coupling for the first time irradiated atmosphere profiles and inner structures. We focus on HD 209458-like systems and show that irradiation effects can substantially affect the radius of sub-jovian mass giant planets. Irradiation effects, however, cannot alone explain the large observed radius of HD 209458b. Adopting assumptions which optimise irradiation effects and taking into account the extension of the outer atmospheric layers, we still find ~20% discrepancy between observed and theoretical radii. An extra source of energy seems to be required to explain the observed value of the first transit planet.

Design concepts for the Cherenkov Telescope Array CTA: an advanced facility for ground-based high-energy gamma-ray astronomy

Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5–10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV–10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. This document reports on the status and presents the major design concepts of CTA.

A Higher‐resolution Version of the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model (MPI‐ESM1.2‐HR)

Abstract The MPI‐ESM1.2 is the latest version of the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model and is the baseline for the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 and current seasonal and decadal climate predictions. This paper evaluates a coupled higher‐resolution version (MPI‐ESM1.2‐HR) in comparison with its lower‐resolved version (MPI‐ESM1.2‐LR). We focus on basic oceanic and atmospheric mean states and selected modes of variability, the El Niño/Southern Oscillation and the North Atlantic Oscillation. The increase in atmospheric resolution in MPI‐ESM1.2‐HR reduces the biases of upper‐level zonal wind and atmospheric jet stream position in the northern extratropics. This results in a decrease of the storm track bias over the northern North Atlantic, for both winter and summer season. The blocking frequency over the European region is improved in summer, and North Atlantic Oscillation and related storm track variations improve in winter. Stable Atlantic meridional overturning circulations are found with magnitudes of ~16 Sv for MPI‐ESM1.2‐HR and ~20 Sv for MPI‐ESM1.2‐LR at 26°N. A strong sea surface temperature bias of ~5°C along with a too zonal North Atlantic current is present in both versions. The sea surface temperature bias in the eastern tropical Atlantic is reduced by ~1°C due to higher‐resolved orography in MPI‐ESM‐HR, and the region of the cold‐tongue bias is reduced in the tropical Pacific. MPI‐ESM1.2‐HR has a well‐balanced radiation budget and its climate sensitivity is explicitly tuned to 3 K. Although the obtained reductions in long‐standing biases are modest, the improvements in atmospheric dynamics make this model well suited for prediction and impact studies.

Ultrathin PbS Sheets by Two-Dimensional Oriented Attachment

Controlling anisotropy is a key concept in the generation of complex functionality in advanced materials. For this concept, oriented attachment of nanocrystal building blocks, a self-assembly of particles into larger single-crystalline objects, is one of the most promising approaches in nanotechnology. We report here the two-dimensional oriented attachment of lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals into ultrathin single-crystal sheets with dimensions on the micrometer scale. We found that this process is initiated by cosolvents, which alter nucleation and growth rates during the primary nanocrystal formation, and is finally driven by dense packing of oleic acid ligands on {100} facets of PbS. The obtained nanosheets can be readily integrated in a photodetector device without further treatment.

WHIZARD—simulating multi-particle processes at LHC and ILC

We describe the universal Monte-Carlo (parton-level) event generator WHIZARD ( http://whizard.event-generator.org ), version 2. The program automatically computes complete tree-level matrix elements, integrates them over phase space, evaluates distributions of observables, and generates unweighted partonic event samples. These are showered and hadronized by calling external codes, either automatically from within the program or via standard interfaces. There is no conceptual limit on the process complexity; using current hardware, the program has successfully been applied to hard scattering processes with up to eight particles in the final state. Matrix elements are computed as helicity amplitudes, so spin and color correlations are retained. For event generation, processes can be concatenated with full spin correlation, so factorized approximations to cascade decays are possible when complete matrix elements are not desired. The Standard Model, the MSSM, and many alternative models such as Little Higgs, anomalous couplings, or effects of extra dimensions or noncommutative SM extensions have been implemented. Using standard interfaces to parton shower and hadronization programs, WHIZARD covers physics at hadron, lepton, and photon colliders.

Microplastics detected in cirrhotic liver tissue

BACKGROUND: The contamination of ecosystem compartments by microplastics (MPs) is an ubiquitous problem. MPs have been observed in mice tissues, and recently in human blood, stool and placenta. However, two aspects remain unclear: whether MPs accumulate in peripheral organs, specifically in the liver, and if liver cirrhosis favours this process. We aimed to examine human liver tissue samples to determine whether MPs accumulate in the liver. METHODS: This proof-of-concept case series, conducted in Germany, Europe, analyzed tissue samples of 6 patients with liver cirrhosis and 5 individuals without underlying liver disease. A total of 17 samples (11 liver, 3 kidney and 3 spleen samples) were analyzed according to the final protocol. A reliable method for detection of MP particles from 4 to 30 µm in human tissue was developed. Chemical digestion of tissue samples, staining with Nile red, subsequent fluorescent microscopy and Raman spectroscopy were performed. Morphology, size and composition of MP polymers were assessed. FINDINGS: Considering the limit of detection, all liver, kidney and spleen samples from patients without underlying liver disease tested negative for MPs. In contrast, MP concentrations in cirrhotic liver tissues tested positive and showed significantly higher concentrations compared to liver samples of individuals without underlying liver disease. Six different microplastic polymers ranging from 4 to 30 µm in size were detected. INTERPRETATION: This proof-of-concept case series assessed the presence of MPs in human liver tissue and found six different MP polymers in the liver of individuals with liver cirrhosis, but not in those without underlying liver disease. Future studies are needed to evaluate whether hepatic MP accumulation represents a potential cause in the pathogenesis of fibrosis, or a consequence of cirrhosis and portal hypertension. The release and trans-synaptic transmission of Tau via exosomes

BACKGROUND: Tau pathology in AD spreads in a hierarchical pattern, whereby it first appears in the entorhinal cortex, then spreads to the hippocampus and later to the surrounding areas. Based on this sequential appearance, AD can be classified into six stages ("Braak stages"). The mechanisms and agents underlying the progression of Tau pathology are a matter of debate. Emerging evidence indicates that the propagation of Tau pathology may be due to the transmission of Tau protein, but the underlying pathways and Tau species are not well understood. In this study we investigated the question of Tau spreading via small extracellular vesicles called exosomes. METHODS: Exosomes from different sources were analyzed by biochemical methods and electron microscopy (EM) and cryo-EM. Microfluidic devices that allow the culture of cell populations in different compartments were used to investigate the spreading of Tau. RESULTS: We show that Tau protein is released by cultured primary neurons or by N2a cells overexpressing different Tau constructs via exosomes. Neuron-derived exosomal Tau is hypo-phosphorylated, compared with cytosolic Tau. Depolarization of neurons promotes release of Tau-containing exosomes, highlighting the importance of neuronal activity. Using microfluidic devices we show that exosomes mediate trans-neuronal transfer of Tau depending on synaptic connectivity. Tau spreading is achieved by direct transmission of exosomes between neurons. In organotypic hippocampal slices, Tau-containing exosomes in conditioned medium are taken up by neurons and microglia, not astrocytes. In N2a cells, Tau assemblies are released via exosomes. They can induce inclusions of other Tau molecules in N2a cells expressing mutant human Tau. We also studied exosomes from cerebrospinal fluid in AD and control subjects containing monomeric and oligomeric Tau. Split-luciferase complementation reveals that exosomes from CSF can promote Tau aggregation in cultured cells. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that exosomes contribute to trans-synaptic Tau transmission, and thus offer new approches to control the spreading of pathology in AD and other tauopathies.

Aβ Oligomers Cause Localized Ca 2+ Elevation, Missorting of Endogenous Tau into Dendrites, Tau Phosphorylation, and Destruction of Microtubules and Spines

Aggregation of amyloid-beta (Abeta) and Tau protein are hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and according to the Abeta-cascade hypothesis, Abeta is considered toxic for neurons and Tau a downstream target of Abeta. We have investigated differentiated primary hippocampal neurons for early localized changes following exposure to Abeta oligomers. Initial events become evident by missorting of endogenous Tau into the somatodendritic compartment, in contrast to axonal sorting in normal neurons. In missorted dendritic regions there is a depletion of spines and local increase in Ca(2+), and breakdown of microtubules. Tau in these regions shows elevated phosphorylation at certain sites diagnostic of AD-Tau (e.g., epitope of antibody 12E8, whose phosphorylation causes detachment of Tau from microtubules, and AT8 epitope), and local elevation of certain kinase activities (e.g., MARK/par-1, BRSK/SADK, p70S6K, cdk5, but not GSK3beta, JNK, MAPK). These local effects occur without global changes in Tau, tubulin, or kinase levels. Somatodendritic missorting occurs not only with Tau, but also with other axonal proteins such as neurofilaments, and correlates with pronounced depletion of microtubules and mitochondria. The Abeta-induced effects on microtubule and mitochondria depletion, Tau missorting, and loss of spines are prevented by taxol, indicating that Abeta-induced microtubule destabilization and corresponding traffic defects are key factors in incipient degeneration. By contrast, the rise in Ca(2+) levels, kinase activities, and Tau phosphorylation cannot be prevented by taxol. Incipient and local changes similar to those of Abeta oligomers can be evoked by cell stressors (e.g., H(2)O(2), glutamate, serum deprivation), suggesting some common mechanism of signaling.

Strongly Photoluminescent CdTe Nanocrystals by Proper Surface Modification

CdTe nanoclusters were prepared in aqueous solution by the reaction between Cd 2+ and NaHTe in the presence of thioglycolic acid. Under reflux, the clusters start to crystallize and show a narrow band emission. The photoluminescence efficiency of CdTe nanocrystals strongly depends on the pH value of the colloidal solution. The maximum quantum yield at room temperature is approximately 18% when the pH value of the CdTe solution is brought to 4.5 by using thioglycolic acid. The optical spectroscopy studies imply that the pH-dependent behavior of the CdTe nanocrystals' fluorescence is caused by structural changes on the surface rather than the size of the nanocrystals. Systematic absorption and fluorescence studies on dialyzed samples suggest that in the acidic range a shell of cadmium thiol complexes is formed around the CdTe core. Thus, the fluorescence quantum yield is enhanced dramatically when the solution is made acidic. In contrast, such a shell can also be produced in the alkaline range, but only after the CdTe nanocrystal crude solution is purified by dialysis.

Magnetic Resonance Perfusion Measurements for the Noninvasive Detection of Coronary Artery Disease

BACKGROUND: With MRI, an index of myocardial perfusion reserve (MPRI) can be determined. We assessed the value of this technique for the noninvasive detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with suspected CAD. METHODS AND RESULTS: Eighty-four patients referred for a primary diagnostic coronary angiography were examined with a 1.5 T MRI tomograph (Philips-ACS). For each heartbeat, 5 slices were acquired during the first pass of 0.025 mmol gadolinium-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid/kg body weight before and during adenosine vasodilation by using a turbo-gradient echo/echo-planar imaging-hybrid sequence. MPRI was determined from the alteration of the upslope of the myocardial signal intensity curves for 6 equiangular segments per slice. Receiver operating characteristics were performed for different criteria to differentiate ischemic and nonischemic segments. Prevalence of CAD was 51%. Best results were achieved when only the 3 inner slices were assessed and a threshold value of 1.1 was used for the second smallest value as a marker for significant CAD. This approach yielded a sensitivity of 88%, specificity of 90%, and accuracy of 89%. CONCLUSIONS: The determination of MPRI with MRI yields a high diagnostic accuracy in patients with suspected CAD.

A three‐dimensional analysis of marine radar images for the determination of ocean wave directionality and surface currents

A series of spatial wave images recorded by a conventional marine radar is analyzed to determine the three‐dimensional E ( k x , k y , ω) spectrum. In the absence of a surface current the spectral energy in this three‐dimensional wave number frequency space will lie on a shell defined by the dispersion relationship. Any deviation from the expected dispersion relationship can be interpreted as being due to a current induced Doppler shift of the wave frequency. A least squares curve fitting technique is used to determine the surface current required to account for the observed Doppler shift. A comparison of the radar determined spectra and surface currents with ground truth data indicates that the radar system and analysis technique produces results consistent with conventional instrumentation.

Evolution of an Ensemble of Nanoparticles in a Colloidal Solution: Theoretical Study

The evolution of a nanosized particle in colloidal solution has been studied theoretically. The model developed is based on the size dependence of the activation energies of the growth and dissolution processes and takes into account the mass transport dynamics. Using this model, Monte Carlo simulations of the evolution of an ensemble of growing nanoparticles during Ostwald ripening have been performed, and conditions leading to either “focusing” or “defocusing” of the particle size distribution were found. The stationary particle size distribution inherent to the Ostwald ripening process in ensembles of nanoparticles less than 5 nm in radius is narrower and more symmetric than that predicted by the Lifshitz−Slyozov−Wagner theory valid for ensembles of larger (>20 nm in radius) colloidal particles. The growth of nanoparticles in the diffusion-controlled regime results in better final size distributions as compared with those grown in the reaction-controlled regime. The dependence of the particle size distribution on a number of external and internal ensemble characteristics is studied and possible ways of controlling the particle size distribution are discussed.

Tuning Size and Sensing Properties in Colloidal Gold Nanostars

Gold nanostars are multibranched nanoparticles with sharp tips, which display extremely interesting plasmonic properties but require optimization. We present a systematic investigation of the influence of different parameters on the size, morphology, and monodispersity of Au nanostars obtained via seeded growth in concentrated solutions of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) in N,N-dimethylformamide. Controlled prereduction of Au(3+) to Au(+) was found to influence monodispersity (narrower plasmon bands), while the [HAuCl(4)]/[seed] molar ratio significantly affects the morphology and tip plasmon resonance frequency. We also varied the size of the seeds (2-30 nm) and found a clear influence on the final nanostar dimensions as well as on the number of spikes, while synthesis temperature notably affects the morphology of the particles, with more rounded morphologies formed above 60 °C. This rounding effect allowed us to confirm the importance of sharp tips on the optical enhancing behavior of these nanoparticles in surface-enhanced raman scattering (SERS). Additionally, the sensitivity toward changes in the local refractive index was found to increase for larger nanostars, though lower figure of merit (FOM) values were obtained because of the larger polydispersity.

Carbon‐enhanced Metal‐poor Stars. I. Chemical Compositions of 26 Stars

The chemical compositions of 26 metal-poor stars that exhibit strong CH and/or C 2 molecular bands are determined. Twenty-two stars in our sample satisfy our definition for carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars based on the carbon abundance ratio ([C/Fe]) and the evolutionary status. In addition, we measure Na abundances for nine known carbon-enhanced stars. Combining our new sample with the results of previous work, we investigate the abundance and evolutionary status of a total of 64 CEMP stars. The following results are obtained: (1) All but one of the 37 stars with [Fe/H] ≥ -2.6 exhibit large excesses of barium ([Ba/Fe] > +0.5), while the other 27 stars with lower metallicity exhibit a large scatter in their barium abundance ratios (-1.2 < [Ba/Fe] < +3.3). (2) A correlation between the carbon and barium abundance ratios ([C/Fe] and [Ba/Fe]) is found in Ba-enhanced objects (comprising 54 stars), suggesting that the origin of the observed carbon excess in Ba-enhanced stars is nucleosynthesis in AGB stars, where the main s -process occurs. (3) The majority of the Ba-enhanced stars have -1.0 < [C/H] < 0.0, and a clear cutoff exists at [C/H] ~ 0, which we take as the limit of carbon enrichment by metal-poor AGB stars. The [C/H] values of Ba-normal stars are relatively low, with a wide distribution. (4) The difference in the distributions of evolutionary status between Ba-enhanced and Ba-normal CEMP stars suggested by our previous work is not statistically confirmed by the present, enlarged sample. (5) Excesses of Na are found in stars with extremely large enhancements of C, N, and Ba, suggesting efficient production of this element by AGB nucleosynthesis. The implications of these results on the origins of carbon in CEMP stars are discussed.

Murine hepatocyte apoptosis induced in vitro and in vivo by TNF- alpha requires transcriptional arrest.

Freshly isolated mouse hepatocytes were essentially insensitive to TNF-alpha cytotoxicity. However, TNF-alpha induced a concentration-dependent cell death in hepatocytes that had been pretreated with the transcriptional inhibitors actinomycin D (ActD), D-galactosamine, or alpha-amanitin. Unlike RNA synthesis inhibition, a translational block in the presence of cycloheximide (CHX) or puromycin did not sensitive hepatocytes to TNF. On the contrary, these agents prevented hepatocytotoxicity induced by ActD/TNF. Pretreatment with peroxides or glutathione depletors had no significant influence on TNF cytotoxicity. In vivo treatment of mice with ActD/TNF caused hepatic failure, which was significantly reduced by co-treatment with CHX. These findings demonstrate that protein synthesis is required for this mechanism of cell death. To test whether TNF may trigger an endogenous suicide program in hepatocytes, we examined whether DNA fragmentation preceded cell death. In the culture system, hepatocellular DNA fragmentation in the presence of ActD/TNF was observed several hours before lactate dehydrogenase release and was inhibited by CHX. Similar results were obtained in vivo. Chromatin condensation and the formation of apoptotic bodies were observed in livers from mice treated with ActD/TNF and significant DNA fragmentation was detected as early as 4 h after challenge. At this time, organ total glutathione content and plasma transaminase levels were not significantly different from those of untreated controls. The findings of this study demonstrate that direct hepatotoxicity of TNF-alpha is associated with an apoptotic mechanism that becomes manifest under the metabolic condition of arrested transcription and functional translation.

GeoSentinel Surveillance of Illness in Returned Travelers, 2007–2011

BACKGROUND: International travel continues to increase, particularly to Asia and Africa. Clinicians are increasingly likely to be consulted for advice before travel or by ill returned travelers. OBJECTIVE: To describe typical diseases in returned travelers according to region, travel reason, and patient demographic characteristics; describe the pattern of low-frequency travel-associated diseases; and refine key messages for care before and after travel. DESIGN: Descriptive, using GeoSentinel records. SETTING: 53 tropical or travel disease units in 24 countries. PATIENTS: 42 173 ill returned travelers seen between 2007 and 2011. MEASUREMENTS: Frequencies of demographic characteristics, regions visited, and illnesses reported. RESULTS: Asia (32.6%) and sub-Saharan Africa (26.7%) were the most common regions where illnesses were acquired. Three quarters of travel-related illness was due to gastrointestinal (34.0%), febrile (23.3%), and dermatologic (19.5%) diseases. Only 40.5% of all ill travelers reported pretravel medical visits. The relative frequency of many diseases varied with both travel destination and reason for travel, with travelers visiting friends and relatives in their country of origin having both a disproportionately high burden of serious febrile illness and very low rates of advice before travel (18.3%). Life-threatening diseases, such as Plasmodium falciparum malaria, melioidosis, and African trypanosomiasis, were reported. LIMITATIONS: Sentinel surveillance data collected by specialist clinics do not reflect healthy returning travelers or those with mild or self-limited illness. Data cannot be used to infer quantitative risk for illness. CONCLUSION: Many illnesses may have been preventable with appropriate advice, chemoprophylaxis, or vaccination. Clinicians can use these 5-year GeoSentinel data to help tailor more efficient pretravel preparation strategies and evaluate possible differential diagnoses of ill returned travelers according to destination and reason for travel.
