Teamwork for innovation – the ‘troika’ of promotors
Jürgen Hauschildt, Edgar Kirchmann
2001· R and D Management198doi:10.1111/1467-9310.00195

The management of innovation requires ‘champions’ or ‘promotors’ who commit with enthusiasm to the new product or the new process idea. More complex innovations will require more than one promotor. Division of labour becomes an essential success factor. According to the promotor model, at least a dyad of a ‘power promotor’ and a ‘technology promotor’ is necessary to overcome the barriers of unwillingness and of ignorance. With growing complexity, additional problems of communication and process management will occur. This will demand a third team member, the ‘process promotor’, who is needed to overcome the barriers of non‐responsibility and non‐communication between the organisational units involved and to act as navigator of the process. In this article, we present an empirical investigation of 133 innovations in the German plant construction and engineering industry. The results strengthen the hypothesis that the level of success of an innovation depends on the existence of a ‘troika’ of promotors.

Physiological Rates of Starch Breakdown in Isolated Intact Spinach Chloroplasts
Mark Stitt, Hans Walter Heldt
1981· PLANT PHYSIOLOGY117doi:10.1104/pp.68.3.755

Starch breakdown with rates above 10 muatom carbon per mg chlorophyll per hour has been monitored in spinach chloroplasts and compares favorably with the rates in whole leaves. Intact starch-loaded chloroplasts were prepared from protoplasts to avoid rupture during mechanical homogenization and rapid centrifugation. Particular attention was paid to the identification of all the products of starch degradation and to measuring the actual rates of their accumulation. The products of starch breakdown included triose phosphate, 3-phosphoglycerate, CO(2), glucose, and some maltose. Comparison of the rates of metabolism of added glucose and of the conversion of starch to phosphorylated intermediates showed that starch phosphorolysis was the major pathway leading to phosphorylated endproducts. From the results, the relative contribution of phosphorolysis and hydrolysis to starch breakdown and the contribution of glycolysis and the oxidative pentose phosphate cycle can be estimated. Phosphate has a large influence on the metabolism of the chloroplast in the dark.

Eco-Innovation Through Integration, Regulation and Cooperation: Comparative Insights from Case Studies in Three Manufacturing Sectors
Marcus Wagner, Patrick Llerena
2011· Industry and Innovation116doi:10.1080/13662716.2011.621744

This paper analyses the role of integration of environmental aspects with corporate strategy in private firms as well as institutional factors relating to market demand, cooperation and regulation as antecedents for eco-innovations. Using a framework based on evolutionary economic concepts, the paper derives results from analysing nine case studies and finds that the realization of eco-innovation is often an activity originating at the micro-level that however requires simultaneous integration of environmental aspects with the overall corporate strategy. Furthermore, market demand is identified as a crucial driver of eco-innovation and regulation as a complementary institutional factor especially for the diffusion of eco-innovation. Ultimately, the paper identifies issues of path-dependency at the firm level that so far have been insufficiently taken into account by policymaking bodies.

Simulation methodology for the identification of critical operating conditions of planetary journal bearings in wind turbines

Abstract The usage of journal bearings as planetary bearings in wind turbines instead of roller bearings has become more common in recent years. Their usage is advantageous, due to smaller installation space needed compared to roller bearings allowing for higher power densities of wind turbine drive trains. However, this technology presents a challenge since there is currently no standardized approach for the design of planetary journal bearings regarding wear. Due to varying wind speeds and dynamic operating events a large variation of loads has to be considered in the design process of a planetary journal bearing for wind turbines. Some of these loads are considered potentially critical to the journal bearing in terms of wear. Identifying these critical load areas early in the design phase supports a reliable bearing design and wind turbine operation. This paper introduces a method to identify critical operating conditions for planetary journal bearings using a simulation tool chain, which couples a multi body simulation (MBS) model of a wind turbine with an elasto-hydrodynamic (EHD) model of the planetary journal bearing. Based on the EHD results critical operating conditions are determined for the planetary bearing. Furthermore, methods are implemented to reduce the number of required EHD simulations for analysing the bearing design. The combination of the identification of critical operating conditions, while reducing the computational effort leads to a simulation methodology, which enables a faster bearing design assessment considering the wide variation of wind turbine operating conditions. The applicability of this method is demonstrated by a simplified use case. Firstly, this paper introduces the MBS model and the parameter space that describes possible combinations of bearing loads such as forces, moments and rotational speed. Due to the number of combinations and the EHD computing effort, the identified parameter space is secondly sampled statistically to reduce the simulation effort. A risk map is derived from the EHD results, to easily indicate potentially critical operating conditions for the planetary journal bearing.

Partial Visual Feedback and Spatial End-Point Accuracy of Discrete Aiming Movements
Will Spijkers, Petra Lochner
1994· Journal of Motor Behavior20doi:10.1080/00222895.1994.9941684

Five experiments are reported in which the effect of partial visual feedback on the accuracy of discrete target aiming was investigated. Visual feedback was manipulated through a spectacle-mounted liquid-crystal tachistoscope. The length of the visual feedback interval was varied as a percentage of the instructed movement time. In Experiment 1, the length of the vision interval was manipulated symmetrically at the beginning- and end-phase of the movement, whereas in the remaining experiments, the vision time was varied with respect to the end-phase only. The variations at the end were examined for different distances (Experiment 2), different movement speeds at the same distance (Experiment 3), and in small interstep intervals (Experiment 4). A vision time of more than 150 ms at the end-phase of the movement enhanced aiming performance in all experiments. Longer vision times monotonously improved aiming accuracy; the fifth experiment showed that a vision time of about 275 ms was sufficient for near-perfect aiming. Furthermore, the significance of vision during the first phase of a movement was demonstrated again. The results of the five experiments pointed to shorter visuomotor processing times. To explain the beneficial effects of short vision times for aiming accuracy, we propose a model of visuomotor processing that is based on the stochastic optimized submovement model of Meyer, Abrams, Kornblum, Wright, and Smith (1988).

Corporate Social Responsibility – Innovation oder Tradition? Zum Wandel der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung von Unternehmen in Deutschland
Stefanie Hiß
2009· Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik19doi:10.5771/1439-880x-2009-3-287

In the last few years corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a new buzzword in Germany. Corporations have established own CSR departments, issued regularly CSR reports, have become members of CSR associations or initiatives and collectively sent out the message that they comprehensively master their societal responsibilities. Thereby, social responsibility of corporations is not an entirely new phenomenon in Germany. In the paper the change from an implicit social responsibility of corporations as institutionalized in laws and regulations in the times of Germany Inc. to an explicitly voluntary CSR will be reconstructed.

Corporate Communicative Responsibility. Kommunikation als Ziel und Mittel unternehmerischer Verantwortungswahrnehmung – Studienergebnisse aus Österreich
Franzisca Weder, Matthias Karmasin
2011· Zeitschrift für Wirtschafts- und Unternehmensethik16doi:10.5771/1439-880x-2011-3-410

The comparison of the data of four manager surveys 1995, 2006, 2007 and 2009 in Austria embedded in the international discussion about CSR-and sustainability practices shows that there is awareness of the necessity of the corporate responsibility of business, but that possibilities to act are restricted. However, the results show that communication is both a means and an end, when it comes to new potentials of integrating ethical and entrepreneurial acting. The increased consciousness for and reflection of ethical internal and external communication is described as 'return of value-based management'.

Die Laien kommen! Wirklich?
