In Open Access’s Long Shadow – A view from the Humanities
Enrico Natale
2019· 027 7 Zeitschrift für Bibliothekskultur8doi:10.12685/027.7-6-1-184

Historians have been in recent years among the most vocal critics against open access to scientific literature. Discussing the controversies they have triggered in Europe and in the USA, we argue that research on open access should be broadened chronologically and thematically. The first section recalls the very first debate on open access that took place among library professionals at the turn of the XXth century and points similarities with the present situation. The second section reviews the criticisms levelled by humanities disciplines against mandatory regulations on open access. The third section argues that the potential of open access for science democratization and knowledge dissemination may not be taken for granted and need further empirical assessment.

Final Report For The Pilot Project "Data And Service Center For The Humanities" (Dasch)
L. Rosenthaler, Peter Fornaro, Beat Immenhauser, David Böni
2015· Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)3doi:10.5281/zenodo.822918

This report describes the main lessons learned from the pilot phase we have carried out with existing real-world humanities research projects. Above all, it has become clear that no single, monolithic virtual research environment (VRE) with a generic user interface can meet the needs of all projects. A significant number of projects require an open, extensible platform that enables them to choose the functionality that is relevant to their needs, to create custom user interfaces and client applications, and to integrate new research tools into their workflow. The new Knora architecture has been conceived from the ground up to meet these requirements. Salsah still exists as one component of Knora, providing a powerful, but optional, virtual research environment with a generic user interface.

Qualitäts- Und Leistungsbeurteilung In Den Geistes- Und Sozialwissenschaften: Prinzipien, Ansätze Und Verfahren
Marlène Iseli
2016· Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)1doi:10.5281/zenodo.886498

Gegenstand, Relevanz Und Praxis Der Geisteswissenschaften - Eine Philosophisch-Anthropologische Begründung
Markus Zürcher
2015· Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)1doi:10.5281/zenodo.888968

Olga Kostrova
2013· VAKKI Publications.1doi:10.70484/vakki.149118

The present paper is based on earlier research on the functions of compound sentences in authorial and personal speech. In this paper, the functions of compound sentences in German scientific texts are analyzed from the general textual perspective. In scientific texts, this perspective is specified as argumentation. In German compound sentences, used in scientific texts, the argumentative viewpoint is manifested by variable means. In the sentences that contain subordinate clauses which are syntactically subjects, objects or predicates, lexical means are used to denote this perspective. They are actualized by matrix predicates having local or directional semantics. In causal clauses, the argumentative viewpoint is manifested by causal connectives. In relative clauses, this viewpoint is expressed indirectly by means of making terminological notions clear.

Nomisma.org as a Community-Driven Infrastructure: Developments, Challenges, and Benefits

Nomisma.org as a Community-Driven Infrastructure: Developments, Challenges, and Benefits Our presentation will outline the recent developments and current status of Nomisma.org, with a particular focus on the opportunities and challenges inherent in maintaining a community-based digital infrastructure. In addition to reporting on progress in terms of content and technology, we address a number of internal and less visible issues that are nonetheless central to the long-term sustainability and scholarly usefulness of Nomisma.org. The paper will focus on the following key aspects: ● Expanding in different directions: While Nomisma.org started mainly with Greek and Roman numismatics – where we will also present the most recent developments – it has increasingly incorporated other fields, such as Celtic as well as medieval and modern European numismatics, and forgeries. At the same time, there is a growing emphasis on linking numismatic objects more closely to their archaeological contexts, thereby strengthening connections between numismatics and material culture research more broadly. ● Handling of visual aspects: This includes symbols, monograms, and other visual elements on numismatic objects, and the question of how such features can be described and shared across different projects. In this context, the Imagines Nummorum project (https://www.imagines-nummorum.eu/en) is developing a hierarchical iconographic thesaurus for Greek numismatics, providing a more fine-grained semantic framework for the description and analysis of coin imagery. ● Handling of uncertain and vague statements: While this is a general aspect and not bound to numismatics, it is particularly relevant to the field. Nomisma.org has been developing and discussing approaches to and solutions for this problem for more than a decade. Collaborations with other initiatives, such as the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany, especially NFDI4Objects (https://www.nfdi4objects.net/en/about/), aim to further refine these solutions and ensure interoperability with related data infrastructures. ● Internal restructuring efforts: The expansion into multiple numismatic subfields has led to a growing number of concepts within the Nomisma.org ID namespace (vocabulary), often with terms whose meanings vary across scholarly traditions. For example, the word 'stater' carries different meanings in Greek and Celtic numismatics. Because of this, Nomisma.org provides two different IDs for it. In parallel, the ontology has been extended over time with additional properties, prompting a recent reorganisation to improve clarity and usability. Increasing need for documentation and training: In response to the growing complexity of the infrastructure, there is an increasing demand to develop enhanced documentation and training materials for the utilisation of Nomisma.org. This endeavour is undertaken within the framework of the Nomisma.org Cookbook (https://nomisma.hypotheses.org/nomisma-org/the-nomisma-org-cookbook), which serves as a compendium of best practices and practical guide for users and contributors.

2026· Qucosa (Saxon State and University Library Dresden)

2025· Transylvanian Reviewdoi:10.33993/tr.2025.2.08

The theft of four treasure pieces from the Drents Museum in Assen has once again brought to public attention the issue of cultural heritage management in Romania. Unfortunately, it took a criminal act for citizens to become aware of the major dysfunctions in the regulation, funding, and security of this heritage. The lack of interest and vision among public institutions in Romania has led to the phenomenon of treasure hunting using metal detectors—which became difficult to quantify over the past 25 years, when the initial regulatory attempts were made—evolving in a direction that has proven to be highly detrimental to the archaeological and cultural heritage. The incomplete management and documentation of archaeological sites, the gaps and inconsistencies in legislation regulating metal detection, the trend of reducing the personnel in public instituti-ons responsible for overseeing the relationship with metal detector users, the venality and lack of education among so-called “treasure hunters,” and, not least, the disappearance of a critical mass within society that would otherwise express interest and concern for the protection of the natio-nal cultural heritage—all these factors, as identified by the author, constitute a converging set of circumstances that has resulted in the largest and most systematic looting of the archaeological heritage in modern history.

This multi-authored report summarizes the results from a transnational questionnaire survey conducted in 2015 by a research team within the DARIAH-EU Digital Methods and Practices Observatory Working Group (DiMPO). The Introduction offers a background to the study in the context of digital humanities work and scholarly practices research. Chapter 1 introduces the methodology, methods, and research design of the study. Chapter 2 presents and discusses the descriptive statistical results of analysing the full dataset of 2,177 valid responses of researchers who reside in Europe and identify one of the human sciences as their primary discipline. It summarises respondent profiles, and findings related to use of research materials and digital access, digitally-enabled scholarly activities, methods and tools, digital publication and dissemination of research results, use of software and services, and respondent assessment of digital needs. Chapters 3 to 9 present a similar analysis for respondents from European countries that have yielded more than 100 valid responses, in the form of national profiles for Austria (Chapter 3), Finland (Chapter 4), Greece (Chapter 5), Lithuania (Chapter 6), Poland (Chapter 7), Serbia (Chapter 8), and Switzerland (Chapter 9). Finally, the study questionnaire is included as an Appendix. The report will hopefully provide a useful baseline for further, timely longitudinal research on the shifting practices and needs of European digitally-enabled researchers in the human sciences.
