Abstract. A new inventory of air pollutant emissions in Asia in the year 2006 is developed to support the Intercontinental Chemical Transport Experiment-Phase B (INTEX-B) funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Emissions are estimated for all major anthropogenic sources, excluding biomass burning. We estimate total Asian anthropogenic emissions in the year 2006 as follows: 47.1 Tg SO2, 36.7 Tg NOx, 298.2 Tg CO, 54.6 Tg NMVOC, 29.2 Tg PM10, 22.2 Tg PM2.5, 2.97 Tg BC, and 6.57 Tg OC. We emphasize emissions from China because they dominate the Asia pollutant outflow to the Pacific and the increase of emissions from China since 2000 is of great concern. We have implemented a series of improved methodologies to gain a better understanding of emissions from China, including a detailed technology-based approach, a dynamic methodology representing rapid technology renewal, critical examination of energy statistics, and a new scheme of NMVOC speciation for model-ready emissions. We estimate China's anthropogenic emissions in the year 2006 to be as follows: 31.0 Tg SO2, 20.8 Tg NOx, 166.9 Tg CO, 23.2 Tg NMVOC, 18.2 Tg PM10, 13.3 Tg PM2.5, 1.8 Tg BC, and 3.2 Tg OC. We have also estimated 2001 emissions for China using the same methodology and found that all species show an increasing trend during 2001–2006: 36% increase for SO2, 55% for NOx, 18% for CO, 29% for VOC, 13% for PM10, and 14% for PM2.5, BC, and OC. Ice nucleating particles (INPs) are vital for ice initiation in, and precipitation from, mixed-phase clouds. A source of INPs from oceans within sea spray aerosol (SSA) emissions has been suggested in previous studies but remained unconfirmed. Here, we show that INPs are emitted using real wave breaking in a laboratory flume to produce SSA. The number concentrations of INPs from laboratory-generated SSA, when normalized to typical total aerosol number concentrations in the marine boundary layer, agree well with measurements from diverse regions over the oceans. Data in the present study are also in accord with previously published INP measurements made over remote ocean regions. INP number concentrations active within liquid water droplets increase exponentially in number with a decrease in temperature below 0 °C, averaging an order of magnitude increase per 5 °C interval. The plausibility of a strong increase in SSA INP emissions in association with phytoplankton blooms is also shown in laboratory simulations. Nevertheless, INP number concentrations, or active site densities approximated using "dry" geometric SSA surface areas, are a few orders of magnitude lower than corresponding concentrations or site densities in the surface boundary layer over continental regions. These findings have important implications for cloud radiative forcing and precipitation within low-level and midlevel marine clouds unaffected by continental INP sources, such as may occur over the Southern Ocean.
Flash memory is being rapidly deployed as data storage for mobile devices such as PDAs, MP3 players, mobile phones, and digital cameras, mainly because of its low electronic power, nonvolatile storage, high performance, physical stability, and portability. One disadvantage of flash memory is that prewritten data cannot be dynamically overwritten. Before overwriting prewritten data, a time-consuming erase operation on the used blocks must precede, which significantly degrades the overall write performance of flash memory. In order to solve this “erase-before-write” problem, the flash memory controller can be integrated with a software module, called “flash translation layer (FTL).” Among many FTL schemes available, the log block buffer scheme is considered to be optimum. With this scheme, a small number of log blocks, a kind of write buffer, can improve the performance of write operations by reducing the number of erase operations. However, this scheme can suffer from low space utilization of log blocks. In this paper, we show that there is much room for performance improvement in the log buffer block scheme, and propose an enhanced log block buffer scheme, called FAST (full associative sector translation). Our FAST scheme improves the space utilization of log blocks using fully-associative sector translations for the log block sectors. We also show empirically that our FAST scheme outperforms the pure log block buffer scheme.
Traditional biochemical methods for enzyme detection are mainly based on antibody-based immunoassays, which lack the ability to monitor the spatiotemporal distribution and, in particular, the in situ activity of enzymes in live cells and in vivo. In this review, we comprehensively summarize recent progress that has been made in the development of small-molecule as well as material-based fluorogenic probes for sensitive detection of the activities of enzymes that are related to a number of human diseases. The principles utilized to design these probes as well as their applications are reviewed. Specific attention is given to fluorogenic probes that have been developed for analysis of the activities of enzymes including oxidases and reductases, those that act on biomacromolecules including DNAs, proteins/peptides/amino acids, carbohydrates and lipids, and those that are responsible for translational modifications. We envision that this review will serve as an ideal reference for practitioners as well as beginners in relevant research fields.
We propose a new anthropometric index, weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), to assess adiposity by standardizing waist circumference (WC) for weight. WWI, calculated as WC (cm) divided by the square root of weight (kg) (cm/√kg), was measured from 465,629 subjects in the Korean nationwide cohort (2008-2013). Cox regression analysis was used to compare WWI with BMI, WC, waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and a body shape index (ABSI) for cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality risk in diagnostic and prognostic prediction models. For incident hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD), BMI had the strongest predictive power, followed by WWI and WC. However, WWI showed the best predictive performance for CVD mortality. Also, a linear positive association between adiposity indices and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality was only shown in WWI and ABSI, not BMI, WC and WHtR which showed inverse J-shaped patterns. In the test of joint effects of each index, WWI combined with BMI was the strongest in both diagnostic and prognostic models. WWI is a unique adiposity index that shows linear positive association with both cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality. It also predicts incident cardiometabolic disease, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality risk with excellence in predictive power, especially when combined with BMI.
ABSTRACT We examine whether equity‐linked private securities offerings are used as a mechanism for tunneling among firms that belong to a Korean chaebol. We find that chaebol issuers involved in intragroup deals set the offering prices to benefit their controlling shareholders. We also find that chaebol issuers (member acquirers) realize an 8.8% (5.8%) higher (lower) announcement return than do other types of issuers (acquirers) if they sell private securities at a premium to other member firms, and if the controlling shareholders receive positive net gains from equity ownership in issuers and acquirers. These results are consistent with tunneling within business groups.
A cellular-level study of the pathophysiology is crucial for understanding the mechanisms behind human diseases. Recent advances in quantitative phase imaging (QPI) techniques show promises for the cellular-level understanding of the pathophysiology of diseases. To provide important insight on how the QPI techniques potentially improve the study of cell pathophysiology, here we present the principles of QPI and highlight some of the recent applications of QPI ranging from cell homeostasis to infectious diseases and cancer.
Internet-of-Things (IoT) is the convergence of Internet with RFID, Sensor and smart objects. IoT can be defined as “things belonging to the Internet” to supply and access all of real-world information. Billions of devices are expected to be associated into the system and that shall require huge distribution of networks as well as the process of transforming raw data into meaningful inferences. IoT is the biggest promise of the technology today, but still lacking a novel mechanism, which can be perceived through the lenses of Internet, things and semantic vision. This paper presents a novel architecture model for IoT with the help of Semantic Fusion Model (SFM). This architecture introduces the use of Smart Semantic framework to encapsulate the processed information from sensor networks. The smart embedded system is having semantic logic and semantic value based Information to make the system an intelligent system. This paper presents a discussion on Internet oriented applications, services, visual aspect and challenges for Internet of things using RFID, 6lowpan and sensor networks.
Fueled by its constant technological and price improvements, information technology (IT) is displacing other inputs in the production of goods and services. By 1994, IT accounts for over 15% of fixed investments by the U.S. private sector, and the ratio of new IT investments to labor costs is approaching 5% (1990 dollar basis). The ability to take advantage of improvements in IT is determined in part by the substitutability of IT for other factors of production. This paper builds on the empirical framework of Brynjolfsson and Hitt (Brynjolfsson, E., L. Hitt. 1995. Information technology as a factor of production the role of differences among firms. Econom. Innovations and New Tech. 3 183–199.) and extends it to jointly estimate output and substitution elasticities using the CES-translog production function. Our primary source of IT-related data is the IDG/Computerworld annual survey data on IS spending by large U.S. firms, for the period 1988 to 1992, previously analyzed by Brynjolfsson and Hitt ([Brynjolfsson, E., L. Hitt. 1995. Information technology as a factor of production the role of differences among firms. Econom. Innovations and New Tech. 3 183–199.], [Brynjolfsson, E., L. Hitt. 1996. Paradox lost? Firm-level evidence on the returns to information systems spending. Management Sci. 42(4) 541–558.]) and Lichtenberg (Lichtenberg, F. R. 1995. The output contributions of computer equipment and personnel a firm level analysis. Econom. Innovations and New Tech. 3 201–217.). A key result is that IT capital is a net substitute for both ordinary capital and labor, suggesting that the factor share of IT in production will grow to more significant levels over time. We confirm earlier findings of positive returns to IT investment for this data set. Further, we find excess returns on IT investment relative to labor input and some evidence of excess returns relative to ordinary capital. Taken together, these results shed new light on the productivity paradox of IT and on the growth of information intensity across the economy as firms take advantage of the continuing improvements in IT.
Although a lot of mitochondria-targeting biothiol probes have been developed and applied to cellular imaging through thiol-induced disulfide cleavage or Michael addition reactions, relatively few probes assess mitochondrial GSH with high selectivity over Cys and Hcy and with NIR fluorescence capable of noninvasive imaging in biological samples. In order to monitor mitochondrial GSH with low background autofluorescence, we designed a heptamethine-azo conjugate as an NIR fluorescent probe by introducing a tunable lipophilic cation unit as the biomarker for mitochondria and a nitroazo group as the GSH-selective reaction site as well as the fluorescence quencher. The probe exhibited a dramatic off-on NIR fluorescence response toward GSH with high selectivity over other amino acids including Cys and Hcy. Further application to cellular imaging indicated that the probe was highly responsive to the changes of mitochondrial GSH in cells.
In this critical review, the ring opening of non-activated 2-substituted aziridines via intermediate aziridinium salts will be dealt with. Emphasis will be put on the relationship between the observed regioselectivity and inherent structural features such as the nature of the C2 aziridine substituent and the nature of the electrophile and the nucleophile. This overview should allow chemists to gain insight into the factors governing the regioselectivity in aziridinium ring openings (81 references).

The authors develop a new survey-based method for measuring and understanding a brand's equity in a product category and evaluating the equity of the brand's extension into a different but related product category. It uses a customer-based definition of brand equity as the added value endowed by the brand to the product as perceived by a consumer. It measures brand equity as the difference between an individual consumer's overall brand preference and his or her brand preference on the basis of objectively measured product attribute levels. To understand the sources of brand equity, the approach divides brand equity into attribute-based and nonattribute-based components. The method provides the market share premium and the price premium attributable to brand equity. The survey-based results from applying the method to the toothpaste and mouthwash categories show that the proposed approach has good reliability, convergent validity, and predictive validity.
We attempt to provide a more nuanced view of the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and firm financial performance using a competitive-action perspective. We argue that competitive action should be considered as an important contingency that determines the effects of CSR activities on firm financial performance. Using data for 113 publicly listed U.S. firms in the software industry between 2000 and 2005, we found that socially responsible activities (positive CSR) enhance firm financial performance when the firm’s competitive-action level is high, whereas socially irresponsible activities (negative CSR) actually improve firm financial performance when the competitive-action level is low. By introducing competitive action as an important contingency, this study contributes to the literature on CSR and strategic management.
The goal of this study was to determine the overall effects of pronunciation instruction (PI) as well as the sources and extent of variance in observed effects. Toward this end, a comprehensive search for primary studies was conducted, yielding 86 unique reports testing the effects of PI. Each study was then coded on substantive and methodological features as well as study outcomes (Cohen’s d ). Aggregated results showed a generally large effect for PI ( d = 0.89 and 0.80 for N -weighted within- and between-group contrasts, respectively). In addition, moderator analyses revealed larger effects for (i) longer interventions, (ii) treatments providing feedback, and (iii) more controlled outcome measures. We interpret these and other results with respect to their practical and pedagogical relevance. We also discuss the findings in relation to instructed second language acquisition research generally and in comparison with other reviews of PI (e.g. Saito 2012). Our conclusion points out areas of PI research in need of further empirical attention and methodological refinement.
This research attempted to examine differences in Internet usage, Internet innovativeness, perceived risks of Internet buying, and Internet buying behaviors between Korea and America, and to identify a model for factors influencing Internet buying behavior, explained by Internet usage, perceived risks, and innovativeness on a cross‐cultural basis. Results showed that there were significant differences in Internet usage and the perceived risks of Internet shopping, but no significant differences in Internet buying intentions or online buying experience between Korean and American consumers. Nonetheless, analyzing a regression model of factors influencing Internet buying behavior, and cultural differences in effects of Internet usage and perceived risks on Internet buying behavior were found. While there were main effects of Internet usage and perceived risk on Internet buying behavior, these effects were weaker or even opposite to those related to Korean samples. The implications of the study are discussed and further research was suggested.
In public relations, employees are regarded as one of the most important strategic constituencies because they interact with external publics on a daily basis. However, employees' communication behavior (ECB) has not been extensively researched in public relations. The purpose of this research was to conceptualize and develop concrete measurements of ECB that can help theoretical development and strategic planning in public relations. In particular, the study identified two unique aspects of ECB—megaphoning and scouting—that refer to employees' voluntary efforts to collect and circulate strategic information externally and internally. In addition, a new concept, microboundary spanning, based on the two aspects of ECB is conceptualized. In this study, symmetrical internal communication and employee-organization relationships were posited as antecedent variables to the proposed ECB variables. A survey research was conducted with 300 employees in different types of organizations in Korea.
Despite growing interest in the visible light‐absorbing organic component of atmospheric aerosols, referred to as “brown” carbon, our knowledge of its chemical composition remains limited. It is well accepted that biomass burning is one important source of “brown” carbon in the atmosphere. In this study, cloud water samples heavily affected by biomass burning were collected at Mount Tai (1534 m, ASL), located in Shandong province in the North China Plain in summer 2008. The samples were analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography equipped with a UV/Vis absorbance detector immediately followed by electrospray ionization and analysis using a time‐of‐flight (ToF) mass spectrometer. The high mass resolution and accuracy provided by the ToF mass spectrometer allow determination of the elemental composition of detected ions. Using this approach, the elemental compositions of 16 major light‐absorbing compounds, which together accounted for approximately half of measured sample absorption between 300 and 400 nm, were determined. The most important classes of light‐absorbing compounds were found to be nitrophenols and aromatic carbonyls. Light absorption over this wavelength range by reduced nitrogen compounds was insignificant in these samples.
The rational construction and operation of an ideal helical spring has been investigated. The infinite helices, [Ag(Py 2 O)]X (Py 2 O = 3,3‘-oxybispyridine; X - = NO 3 -, BF 4 -, ClO 4 -, and PF 6 - ), have been constructed in high yield via cooperative effects of the skewed conformer of Py 2 O and the potential linear geometry of the N−Ag(I)−N bond. Crystallographic characterization reveals that the polymer framework is an ideal cationic cylindrical helix and that its counteranions are pinched in two columns inside the helix. The four anions have been exchanged for each other in an aqueous solution without destruction of the helical skeleton. In particular, [Ag(Py 2 O)]NO 3 prepared by the counteranion exchange can be isolated as crystals suitable for X-ray crystallography in water. The helical pitch is reversibly stretched via the counteranion exchange from 7.430(2) to 9.621(2) Å, and is exactly proportional to the volume of the anion guests. This pitch-tuning is attributed to subtle change in the nonrigid dihedral angles between two pyridyl groups around O and Ag atoms that act as hinges within the helical subunit. Thermal analyses indicate that the helical compounds are stable up to 231−332 °C in the solid state.
The random circuit breaker network model is proposed for unipolar resistance switching behavior. This model describes reversible dynamic processes involving two quasi-metastable states. The formation and rupture of conducting channels (see figure) in the polycrystalline TiO2 thin films may be analyzed by the self organized avalanche process in the random circuit breaker network model.
